Premier League club that no-one saw coming ‘open negotiations’ to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace

England’s Euro 2024 star Marc Guehi has been linked with a move away from Crystal Palace.

Guehi, 24, was selected by Gareth Southgate after impressing at the heart of the Palace defence during the 23/24 season.

Although it was first thought that Guehi was selected to be a backup, the injury to Harry Maguire meant the Palace man was chosen as John Stones’ partner.

Guehi started all but one game due to suspension as England made it all the way to the final, but lost 2-1 to Spain in Berlin.

Due to his impressive performances for Palace and England, Guehi has since been linked with a host of big Premier League sides including Arsenal and Liverpool.

However, it was claimed on Friday afternoon that Newcastle United have opened talks to sign the 24-year-old from Palace.

As per The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who wrote on social media: “EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle United open negotiations with Crystal Palace to sign Marc Guehi. 24yo England centre-back high on list of multiple leading clubs but #NUFC 1st to hold talks after approach to #CPFC this week. According to the report, Guehi is ‘high on the recruitment lists at a number of Europe’s biggest clubs’.

However, Newcastle have made the first move in the race to sign the centre-back as they are the first club to enter ‘meaningful talks’.

The report added: “Palace received Newcastle’s approach this week and if agreements can be reached it will give Eddie Howe’s men a huge lift ahead of the new season.”

Guehi’s current deal at Selhurst Park is set to expire in the summer of 2026 and there have been no indications that he will be signing a new contract.

Aside from Guehi, it is believed that Newcastle are also working on a deal to bring in forward William Osula from relegated Sheffield United.
