Manchester United have reportedly stepped up their interest in Burnley star Sander Berge and could be prepared to offer the midfielder a huge salary increase to convince him to join.
United have already made two major signings this summer, with forward Joshua Zirkzee joining in a £36.5m move from Bologna and defender Leny Yoro signing from Lille in a deal worth up to £63m including add-ons.
Erik ten Hag is keen to further strengthen his squad ahead of the new season, with central midfield one area in need of improvement.
With the future of both Scott McTominay and Casemiro uncertain, United are weighing up a move for Burnley midfielder Berge.
The Norwegian played 37 games in all competitions last season but could not prevent the Clarets from being relegated from the Championship.
Despite that disappointment, Berge impressed with his own individual performances and has been linked with several top clubs including United and Liverpool.
The Sun report that United are now stepping up their efforts to sign the 26-year-old, and could offer him a contract worth £100,000 per week to convince him to join.
That would be a major increase on his current Burnley salary, with Spotrac estimating he is currently on £40,000 per week at Turf Moor.
The report claims that Berge is “excited about the possibility of playing at the Theatre of Dreams on a bumper contract”.
Despite their relegation to the Championship, Burnley are refusing to sell Berge for cheap and are seeking £30m for the midfielder.
The Sun claim that United are only prepared to spent £20m on signing the Norway international, with other areas of the team also in need of reinforcement this summer.
Some United supporters have voiced concerns on social media over signing Berge on a lucrative contract.
“This should better be a rumour, because I don’t understand this unreasonable salary,” one fan posted on X.
Another added: “This is not the kind of player we should be signing.”
While a third wrote: “100K for squad player, stupid deal.”
