Rob McElhenney reveals the bizarre souvenir he collects from every Wrexham game he watches

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has revealed the peculiar memento he keeps from every game he watches in person.

The North Wales club were purchased by McElhenney and fellow Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds towards the end of 2020 and it has been a successful time for the Dragons since the takeover.

Successive promotions have followed from the National League to League One in the past two seasons and the club has made a great start to life this campaign in the third tier of English football.

Phil Parkinson’s men top League One after five games, with four wins and a draw so far to boast an unbeaten record in the division.

Wrexham are back in action on Monday evening when they travel to St Andrews to take on Birmingham City as two sides who will have their sights on being in the top six at the end of the season go head to head.

Wrexham co-owners Reynolds and McElhenney are often spotted at Dragons games, flying in and out from their other commitments to watch the team they own in action in the flesh.

And McElhenney has spoken about the bizarre thing he takes from each Wrexham game he watches in person, with a collection of what he takes now being framed and kept as a permanent memento.

Speaking to the This Week in Wrexham podcast, McElhenney showed off a frame which includes clumps of grass from memorable and special Dragons games he has attended as a co-owner, with the overall mounted collection a gift to him from his wife Caitlin Olson.

He explained: “This was a gift that Kaitlin got me, every game I take a little piece of the pitch with me, I just put it in my pocket.

“So this marks all of the special games, most recently League One promotion [from League Two] – Wrexham 6, Forest Green 0, April 13, 2024.

“I actually wasn’t there for that game because we weren’t sure whether that was going to be the clincher.

“So I had Humphrey [Ker, Wrexham executive director] grab me a bunch of grass and he put it in a plastic bag for me.

“Every other game I’ve been to, and it goes back to our first home win – Wrexham 5, Maidstone 0, August 20, 2022.”
