Liverpool were on the verge of clinching huge £75m transfer in June but deal collapsed after failing to sell one player

Liverpool were on the verge of securing a stunning transfer in June but the deal collapsed after failing to sell one player.

Liverpool are on the cusp of signing their first player this summer as Rio Ngumoha is closing in on his transfer to Anfield from Chelsea.

The Premier League side, now under Arne Slot following his appointment this summer, remain in the market for new talent ahead of the 2024/25 season.

One name which continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool is Newcastle United star and former Everton man Anthony Gordon.

And they nearly struck a deal with Newcastle for the 23-year-old in a transfer that would have seen Joe Gomez move in the opposite direction, according to The Daily Mail.

Newcastle’s pursuit of the defender unfolded after they initially approached Liverpool in early June about whether the Reds had interest in buying either Gordon or Alexander Isak for PSR purposes.

Liverpool weren’t interested in splashing out £100 million as Newcastle turned their attention to Jarell Quansah.

The Magpies then proposed a price of around £80 million for the England international, which was dismissed by Liverpool.

But as Newcastle’s ownership pushed for PSG solutions, they returned with a proposal to buy Gomez for £45 million and sell Gordon to Liverpool for £75 million.

The report states that talks between both camps were ‘promising’ and a medical was even planned in Leipzig, Germany, as the players were involved with England at Euro 2024.

However, at the eleventh hour, with the PSR deadline of June 30 looming, Newcastle found another solution by selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, meaning the Gordon-Gomez deal was called off.

Gomez is also attracting interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia while Liverpool continue to monitor the star winger ahead of making a concrete offer.
