Chelsea may consider signing Piero Hincapie as Enzo Maresca plans to overhaul the left side of his defense.

According to TBR, Chelsea has set its sights on Piero Hincapie. The Ecuadorian player was highly sought after during the summer, and now, The Blues’ coach Enzo Maresca could see him as a choice to strengthen the left side of the defense.

Although they’ve spent a lot on the attack, Chelsea hasn’t focused much on improving the defense. The free transfer of Tosin Adarabioyo is the only significant defensive signing they’ve made. Hincapie has played a total of 14 matches in all competitions for both club and country, with an average rating of 7.01. During that time, the 22-year-old posted some impressive stats.

He averages 2.5 successful tackles per game, 1.9 clearances, 0.8 interceptions, and 0.5 successful dribbles. The Champions League is where Hincapie has shone the most, earning an average score of 7.22 thanks to performances that have helped Bayer become one of seven teams to win both of their first two matches, including yesterday’s victory over AC Milan.

Chelsea has a squad developing strongly under Maresca, and a signing like the 22-year-old South American defender could be crucial, especially as the club is not afraid to spend on the right players.
