In an interview with the Daily Mail, former player Danny Murphy shared his views on Arsenal’s transfer strategy.
Adding new signings has become Arsenal’s top priority this season if they want to compete on equal footing with Manchester City in the Premier League. The Gunners have made two signings in the summer of 2024, including Tommy Setford and Riccardo Calafiori.
Aside from strengthening their defense, Arsenal needs to bolster their attacking power. Many experts believe the Gunners are lacking a quality number 9 in their squad.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Danny Murphy commented on Arsenal’s transfer strategy: “In my view, Arsenal wants to have a squad with enough quality to replace one quality player with another when key players show signs of fatigue.”
“What caused Arsenal to fall behind in the title race last season? Arsenal struggled when facing a hectic and intense schedule during the Christmas period. As a result, they suffered defeats against West Ham United and Fulham.”
“It’s unfair and unrealistic to expect William Saliba and Gabriel to stay healthy and play every match week after week. In this context, Calafiori will give them the time to rest.”
“Similarly, if Merino comes in, he would allow Arteta to rotate personnel, alternating between Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey, or Declan Rice. The squad’s quality will not decrease.”
