England fans all say the same thing about three players during Lee Carsley’s first half as manager

Fans have all had the same verdict on three key players after watching Lee Carsley’s first half as England interim manager against Republic of Ireland.

The Three Lions went into the break 2-0 up following goals from Declan Rice, who didn’t celebrate against the nation he formerly represented, and Jack Grealish, who did celebrate.

There was plenty of free-flowing football on display from the Three Lions in Dublin, with fans quickly noticing several improvements from Gareth Southgate’s more cautious style.

In an area that was generally lacking at Euro 2024, England had lots of possession but crucially did a significant amount with it in the final third, having four shots on target in the opening 30 minutes.

And fans have already picked out three things that Carsley got right with his team selection.

The interim manager has been praised for selecting Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, Grealish in the attacking midfield position and Anthony Gordon on the left wing.

One fan wrote: “What might have been. Grealish in a free role, Gordon running in behind, Trent at right-back.”

A second asked: “Who would have thought a team with Trent, Grealish and Gordon in would have been much more attacking and entertaining?”

A third mused: “Finally we’re seeing a proper 10 in Grealish, Trent at right-back and an out and out winger in Gordon at left wing.”

And a fourth said: “One of the biggest disgraces of English football in the last decade or so is not utilising Trent Alexander-Arnold to the best of his ability.”

Should England secure victory at the Aviva Stadium, they will take a step towards returning to League A of the Nations League at the first time of asking after relegation last season.

Their group in League B consists of Ireland, Greece and Finland, with the winner of the group earning promotion.
