Gary Neville takes dig at Liverpool following first defeat of the Arne Slot era

Gary Neville has taken a brutal swipe at Liverpool after their shock loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

Liverpool started the 2024/25 Premier League season perfectly, heading into the international break with three clean sheets in three consecutive wins, including a dominant performance over long-term rivals Manchester United.

However, their flawless run came to a sudden end on Saturday after Liverpool suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at home.

And Sky Sports pundit Neville wasted no time in taking to social media to take a dig at Arne Slot’s side.

Taking to his Instagram account to post a story, Neville said: “Well… what a football weekend! United win, Salford win & the big one Liverpool LOSE! Oh dear beautiful weekend!”

Earlier in the day, Neville’s former club Manchester United came back from their embarrassing win to Liverpool before the break by thrashing Southampton 3-0 at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Red devils survived an early scare as goalkeeper Andre Onana saved his first penalty for the club, with summer signing Matthijs de Light opening the scoring shortly after.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho sealed the win for the visitors, who have now won two of their four matches this season.

Later that day, Salford City, who Neville owns alongside brother Phil, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and several other former United players, also claimed their second win of the season so far, beating Cheltenham Town 2-1.

Like United, Salford suffered a scared early in the match, as Cheltenham opened the scoring in the 48th minute through Ethon Archer.

However, Neville’s League Two club fought their way back into the game with an equaliser from Hakeed Adelakun on the hour, before he doubled his total for the match to win the match in the 86th minute.

Meanwhile, a goal from Forest winger Callum Hudson-Odoi continued the midland’s clubs four game unbeaten run this season and handed Liverpool their first loss under new manager Arne Slot.

Speaking after the match, the Dutchman said: “It wasn’t good enough today because also too many individual performances in ball possession were not of the standards that I am used to from these players.”
