Liverpool are confident of keeping hold of one of their key defenders after he reversed his recent transfer decision.
Arne Slot is still in the process of figuring out just who will play a key part in his team next season, after only being appointed as manager in July.
With the future of several players still up in the air, one of the Reds’ first-team members has committed to the cause ahead of the new season.
Recent reports had linked England international Joe Gomez with a move away from Anfield.
The 27-year-old was said to be attracting interest from Newcastle United and the defender had been ‘interested’ in the Magpies proposals.
But with just a few weeks until the start of the new Premier League season, Gomez is said to have performed a u-turn.
According to the Sunday Times, Gomez remains committed to Liverpool and is focused on emerging as a key player under the new head coach on Merseyside.
Newcastle United were prepared to pay £45 million for him earlier this summer but any such deal has now been quelled.
The report further states that Liverpool and Newcastle held talks over a move, but discussions never reached the point where Gomez spoke to Eddie Howe’s side.
Liverpool will also still be keen to bolster their defence given Virgil van Dijk’s contract expires in 2025.
Joel Matip also left the club last season leaving the Reds admittedly light at the back, as well as in other areas of the pitch.
Gomez did travel to Germany for Euro 2024 with England but failed to play regularly for the Three Lions.
Fellow reports in the media have also speculated that the former Charlton man has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabia.
The Catford-born defender is under contract with Liverpool until 2027 and will hope to play a huge role under Slot in 2024/25.
