Man City fans are growing increasingly concerned about Kalvin Phillips after his latest performance for the club.
It’s fair to say that Kalvin Phillips’ Manchester City career has been nothing short of a disaster.
City paid Leeds United £45 million for the midfielder’s services in 2022, but in his debut campaign he started just four games in all competitions – two in the Premier League – as his side won the treble.
Phillips barely featured in the first half of last season, prompting City to loan him to West Ham for the remainder of the campaign.
Unfortunately new surroundings did little to revive Phillips’ form, and after a string of poor performances he found himself on the bench and omitted from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.
Phillips is under contract with the Premier League champions for another three years, but he and the club are keen for him to depart this summer on a permanent move.
Despite that, the 28-year-old has travelled to the United States to take part in City’s pre-season tour.
Club bosses will have been hoping that some solid pre-season performances would attract the interest potential suitors, or maybe even earn him some more minutes in Guardiola’s side.
Such an outcome is looking less and less likely though, with Phillips struggling in defeats to Celtic and AC Milan.
On social media plenty of City fans highlighted a second half mistake Phillips made that almost resulted in a goal, as well as footage of him looking slow and lost on the ball.
“Kalvin Phillips. Deary me,” one fan commented on X.
Another replied: “He’s got to go. The confidence is gone and he even stood still and didn’t even bother to try to recover the mistake. Didn’t even try and rectify his error—froze like a statue.”
Another fan asked: “What happened to him man?”
A fourth fan was brutally honest, saying: “Just take the loss. Sell, loan, release I honestly don’t care at this point.”
Everton and several Saudi Pro League clubs have been linked with Phillips this summer.
At his best, Phillips is superb midfielder with a unique skillset. Unfortunately, he just hasn’t been able to perform since joining City two years ago.
