Man Utd agree deal to sell Scott McTominay after 22 years at the club

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sell midfielder Scott McTominay it has been reported.

The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer. His contract expires in 2025, with the option of an additional 12 months.

The 27-year-old featured in United’s opening two Premier League games of the season, and played 12 minutes as a substitute in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton.

But United have now decided to allow him to leave the club.

The Athletic report that they have agreed terms with Napoli over the transfer of McTominay for a fee in the region of €30 million.

The move – should McTominay agree terms with the Italian side – will end a 22-year assiocation with United for the Scotland international, with the Red Devils inserting a sell-on clause into the transfer.

It will aid United in their attempts to steer clear of penalties relating to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), given that McTominay is an academy graduate so his sale will be classed as ‘pure profit’ in the balance books.

The club have rejected various offers from other clubs for the midfielder this summer, including a bid believed to be worth around £20 million from Fulham.

He was United’s joint-third top goalscorer last season, netting 10 goals in all competitions largely through his late runs into the box and aerial ability. He also occasionally operated as a centre forward.

Speaking during United’s pre-season tour of the United States, though, manager Erik ten Hag appeared to indicate he was happy for McTominay to stay at the club.

He said: “I’m so pleased to have him in my squad, for the type of person he is. He has such an impact on this team with his performance and team spirit.”

McTominay’s impending sale could pave the way for PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte to move to Old Trafford before the transfer deadline on Friday.

According to GiveMeSport, United are ‘confident’ that they can secure a deal for the Uruguay international, whom they have pursued for most of the summer.
